How to energise when you’re really, truly tired!

Sometimes it feels like there are simply not enough gallons of coffee or naps in the world to keep you running at a human level of energy all day long. There’s no need to chug crazy canned concoctions or sugared drinks to get through the day without a 3 p.m. slump.

Here are some strategies that will help you up those energy levels:

1. Exercise in the AM

Exercising in the morning kicks ass! It enhances your mood and makes you feel more alert. Working out in the morning is like throwing back a cup of joe. It boosts focus, energy, strength, and endurance—not just in the gym but for many hours afterward.

2. Have Breakfast

Your morning java may give you that quick jolt to get you on your way, but if you want that get-up-and-go feeling to last throughout the day, there’s only one reliable way to get it: Take the time to have breakfast. Aim to eat carbohydrates that digest slowly paired with protein and satisfying healthy fats. For example, rolled oats, dense sprouted whole grain bread, and high-fiber berries with avocado, eggs, or Greek yogurt

3. Talk to a Coworker. (Or talk to yourself.)

If you just need a break from the task at hand, grab a coworker and take a short walk. If you’re working from home or no one’s available, leave your current workspace and interact with someone — anyone. Go outside and find a human to interact with — ordering your coffee, running an errand, whatever!

4. Ditch the Tech

Technology is among the worst multitasking, fatigue causing traps. Find a few times during the day to close your email and power off your phone. If work is especially busy, lunch can be your technology break. If even that feels impossible, set a 1-hour distraction-free window for when you first get home.

5. Take a Short Nap

A few minutes of shut-eye during the day is seen as an essential way of functioning at high levels. The key is to keep your nap short if you need to be refreshed later on. In general, 20 to 30 minutes tends to be the sweet spot!
